VB decreases tax levy and rates

The board approved $3.9 million 2008 budget decreases both the general tax levy and tax rates.

The total tax levy for 2008, which is the amount of money generated solely from taxes, is $2.366 million. While the overall levy will increase from $2.291 million in 2007, the town and village levies will decrease.

Councilor Wendy Van Der Water voted against the budget for a couple of reasons.

"I don't think the recreation supervisor should be a full time position," Van Der Water said about the recently approved, but controversial position created for the Van Buren Parks and Recreation department. She added that the budget included $3,500 allotted for landscaping the town hall. "I think that's outrageous," she said.

All other board members voted yes to approve the budget.

Property owners who reside outside the village will pay a tax rate of $4.81 per $1,000 in property value for both town ($1.94 per thousand) and highway funds ($2.87 per thousand). This is a decrease of 20 cents per thousand from last year. Property owners who reside within the village will pay a tax rate of $1.59 per $1,000 in property value, a decrease of 34 cents per thousand from last year. The overall tax rate for the town of Van Buren will decrease by 4.63 percent.

Total assessed value of the town is $541,823,916 compared with last year's $497,159,504.
