What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive autoimmune disease -- like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis -- in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues.

The disease, which literally means "hard skin," can cause thickening and tightening of skin, as well as serious damage to internal organs including the lungs, heart, kidneys, esophagus and gastrointestinal tract. Scleroderma occurs three to four times more often in women than in men.

Symptoms of scleroderma vary greatly from individual to individual and the effects of the disease range from mile to severe. For some, scleroderma can be life-threatening due to the severity of organ involvement. To date, there is no known cause or cure.

What is the Scleroderma Foundation

The Scleroderma Foundations helps people with scleroderma and their families cope with the disease through support programs, physician referrals and educational information.

The Scleroderma Foundation also promotes public awareness about scleroderma and funds research to improve treatment and discover the cause and cure.
