B'ville: Helping a friend in need

Friends of Harry Michalet invite the community to participate in a benefit for the 1980 Baker High School graduate this Saturday.

This past October, Michalet was diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs Disease/ALS, a fatal neurological disorder characterized by progressive degeneration of motor cells in the spinal cord and brain.

"Harry is a long time friend," said Nancy Windhausen, who is one of several individuals coordinating the benefit. "He has been coping pretty well mentally, but the disease is taking a toll on him physically."

Michalet lives in Baldwinsville with his wife and stepson. A member of the Camillus Rod and Gun Club, he was honorably discharged from the Untied States Marine Corps. and was formerly employed by Galaxy Manufacturing.

The benefit will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. this Saturday at Kowalski's Country Inn at 7153 State Fair Blvd. (Route 48) in Syracuse, near the John Glenn Boulevard and Route 690 interchange.

"We are trying to help Harry and his family with medical expenses," Windhausen said.

Participants can enjoy an Italian buffet, live music and a live auction, as well as many other raffles to help Harry and his family in this difficult time. Tickets can be purchased $10 at Kowalski's in advance or for $15 at the door the day of the benefit. Donations can also be made to Harry Michalet in care of Kowalski's Country Inn.
