B'ville: Education and understanding

Since October, weekly support has been provided to teenage moms at Word of Life Assembly of God at 12 E. Oneida St. in Baldwinsville. Meeting every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the church's fellowship hall, the Teen MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group is open to all high school and college age mothers, including those that are expecting. Jen Bisson is the group's coordinator.

"I went to the national convention for MOPS, and I felt like there was a need for (more teen MOPS groups)," she said.

Currently, there are fewer than 100 Teen MOPS groups in the United States and Canada.

As a former college age mom herself, Bisson was grateful for all of the support she received. So, she enthusiastically recruited a half dozen other church members to serve on a steering team, and currently, the group has five teenage mothers gathering on a regular basis for food, fun and fellowship.

Childcare is provided so that the moms can participate in crafts and other creative activities. The teen moms have been able to learn from guest speakers on topics such as budgeting, discipline and infant safety. Recently, the moms were treated to a spa night full of pampering.

As stated on mops.org, the mission of Teen MOPS is to "provide a faith-based, supportive, nonjudgmental environment where teen moms can come together for support and encouragement Teen MOPS helps teen moms become more self-sufficient, confident, mature, giving and self-aware young women."
