Camillus- Meet 4th Ward Councilor Jim Salanger

Family: Wife Chrissie, daughter/son-in-law Liza and Mike Ponza, daughter Meg, sons Jim and Pat, and grandson Dylan

Education: I started kindergarten at Fairmount School (town hall), upon completion of the new Onondaga Road School we were bused there for the second half of the year. I was in the first, first grade the next year at the new Holy Family School. After eighth grade I attended West Genesee H.S. Upon graduation, I commuted to Le Moyne College where I earned a B.S. industrial relations, honors in major degree.

How long have you been living/working in the area? For the exception of one year, all my life. I was born in Syracuse at the old Memorial Hospital, now part of the Crouse-Irving Memorial complex. My parents and sister lived on Ackerman Avenue in the University area. With it being post-World War II and with a brother on the way, we moved into one of the first new Cape Cod's in Fairmount in September 1953, still the family place to rendezvous.

What is/are your job(s)/position? I am the first vice president, investment officer with Wachovia Securities. I am also the Camillus Fourh Ward town councilman.

How long have you held the position(s)? I have been providing investment consulting services for 21 years, prior to which I was executive director of the New York Utility Contractors Association and assistant executive director of the Syracuse Builders Exchange. I am serving my fourteenth year as councilman.

What are your responsibilities within your career? In both positions it boils down to representing the best interests of the people who select or elect you to work for them. In both positions there are ethical and fiduciary responsibilities. On the investment side, I provide consulting services to pension, annuity, and health and benefit funds. I conduct the investment management searches, perform asset allocation studies and monitor and evaluate performance using numerous statistical benchmarks. I also focus on retirement and estate planning and the planning of lifetime income. On the town side, you have the budget process, the committee process and the management oversight process. I have served on all of the standing committees and am currently chairman of parks and recreation.
