Skaneateles scores twice in Vegas

Lauren Leahy takes two firsts

Ed Mazur and Bill and Marion Leahy's granddaughter Lauren Leahy, of lake Oswego Oregon, took first place in two cheerleading events in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 11.

After cheering for Portland State in Oregon, Leahy now cheers for Weatherford College in Texas. She entered two stunting events with her partner known simply as Tyler. One was the college division representing Weatherford and the other was for the All Star Division representing 'Style Shock,' a cheer gym located in Portland Oregon. The college division included teams representing the University of Oklahoma, Oregon, UNLV, Long Beach State and Weber State. The All Stars featured 11 partner stunt teams including a team representing the Utah Jazz NBA Basketball team.

Leahy and Tyler were the first college cheerleaders to perform on each day of the two-day competition. Their performance was reported to be flawless each day, which proved too much pressure for each subsequent team that followed (10 on Sunday and four on Monday).

Leahy is the daughter of Tim and Carolyn Leahy of Lake Oswego, Oregon. She spends time in Skaneateles each summer and also visits at Christmas. She coaches children in cheerleading. She has competed as a cheerleader for seven years. Someday she would like to bring a weeklong cheer camp to Central New York. Go Lauren!
