Chittenango: Lady athletes honored

The Chittenango Girls Varsity Athletic awards and reception were held June 6. The Scholar Athlete Award for 2007 is sponsored by Burger King of Chittenango and the Chittenango Booster Club and was presented to senior Lauren Whipple. Lauren maintained a better than 95 average while participating in varsity tennis and varsity golf this past academic year.

The Athlete of the Year Award is sponsored by the DiChristina family of Chittenango along with the CCS Booster Club and went to junior Michelle Brandt for her achievements in cross country, indoor and spring track.

All varsity teams presented awards to members of their teams Wednesday. Highlighting the year of efforts by the Lady Bears was perhaps the undefeated 14-0 tennis doubles pairing of junior Lauren Markley and senior Thresa Meyers.

Thresa, a superb athlete, also received awards in volleyball and softball. Junior track stars Marshay Zamblowski and Kaylee Greene re-established some high school track records of their own while senior Aubrey Roman set a course record for a female athlete at Woodcrest Golf course with 41 strokes. Roman only missed by five strokes over the season's accumulated matches from being the Section III representative to the State Golf Team.

Senior lacrosse goalie Julia Cross was recognized by the Onondaga League of Coaches as one of the premier goalies in Central New York with her selection to the All-County Team, while teammate Kailey Krause, who surpassed the 100-goal mark this year as a junior, was selected amongst 400 participants vying for a position on the state Regional Team and participated in a national competition in Pennsylvania this past May.
