B'ville: Hahn Farms, a charming experience

Driving down a country road, with the fresh air and farmland all around, the sweet sound of peace and quiet is a comforting sound. This same road leads to Hahn Farms in Lysander, where one can experience the same quaint feeling.

Donald Hahn owns the farm located on Dunham Road (off Route 370 west of Baldwinsville). For the past 20 years, Hahn has been selling his farm products to the public, both at the farm stand on the corner of Dingle Hole and Church roads in Lysander and at the Saturday farmer's market on Park Street in Syracuse (near the Carousel Mall).

The farm offers flower and vegetable plants in the spring and early summer and vegetables during the harvest season. Flowers include perennials and annuals ranging from Asters to Vinca Vines and spikes, and vegetable plants include zucchini, yellow squash, eggplants, broccoli, butternut squash, cucumbers, a wide variety of tomato plants and much more.

"Every year we are getting more and more people out here," Hahn said.

Entering the property with only a small sign reading open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, visitors pull in and see three greenhouses, along with numerous varieties of flowers displayed outside. Inside one of the greenhouses, thousands of vegetable plants are lined along tables in the sweltering heat. Nestled among one of the plants is a dragonfly, clinging tightly to a leaf as the neighboring tomato plant is picked up and inspected. With no distractions, customers can peruse the greenhouses in search of the perfect plant to complete their garden.

For families, Hahn Farms offers pick your own strawberries in mid June and pick your own tomatoes towards the end of July.

"It's something to do," Hahn said of his life's work.
