B'ville: CustomStorage, custom service

Two years ago, Dick Quinn made a big change in his life.

After serving as the director of supply chain at Raymour and Flannigan's for 15 years, he decided to go into business for himself and opened CustomStorage Solutions.

"When I left there, I decided I was going to do something on my own," Quinn said.

CustomStorage offers homeowners (and business owners) top quality storage facilities right in their home. Quinn uses upper end, durable products through the ClosetMaid MasterSuite line. He said ClosetMaid offers various colors and woods with kitchen cabinet grade quality that can be custom-fit into any space, unlike the one-size fits all boxed organizers found at local department stores.

Born and raised in Baldwinsville, Quinn started working with ClosetMaid when he was installing his own master suite.

"I became interested when I tried to do my own walk in closet. There were really no resources available around here to do it," Quinn said. "There was a need for it."

So, he did his homework and looked at different suppliers, but the training and quality of ClosetMaid caught his eye and he stuck with them.

"The whole dealer network was appealing," Quinn said.

Quinn is a one-man operation. He does the sales, design and installation and also offers free computer design with the estimate. He installs storage systems in garages, pantries, laundry rooms, home offices, everything that entails storage.

No job is too big or small. He installed a master closet in Manlius that covered the area of a three-car garage and has done jobs as simple as installing a shelf for someone. And, depending on the size of the job, he will travel all over. He has traveled as far as Buffalo, Rome, Utica and Mexico.

While Quinn does keep an inventory of some items, he likes to keep it at a minimum so he can pass the savings down to the customer. However, even if he has to order product, he said it takes two weeks at most from the initial consultation to the completed project.

And he loves every minute of his new position.

"Everyday is different. I love working with my customers. I get to do everything. I'm in the office, in the field designing and selling," Quinn said. "I've met a lot of interesting people and get to set my own schedule."

Quinn is in the process of building his own web site, but until then said visitors could check out Closetmaid.com, which will have a link to his web site once it is complete. To contact Quinn, call him at 247-7784 or e-mail him at rquinn@twcny.rr.com.
