The Baldwinsville Fire Department plans to hold its second annual Summer Island Event this year on July 28, looking over the Seneca River on Paper Mill Island.
The event will offer significantly more than last year's event, which entailed an arts and crafts show and brought in around $7,000 for the Baldwinsville Fire Department. This year, families from all over Baldwinsville and surrounding areas can expect to have lots of fun, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. all held on the popular and scenic island in the village.
This year we're really trying to expand this event and make it very family-oriented, said Richard Long of the Baldwinsville Fire Department.
The department has rented a 40- by 80-foot tent to house the crafts fair and food. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the admission is free for all and will include 16 crafters selling various items, as well as lots of fun for kids.
We rented inflatable rides like a moon walk, a slide and basketball, Long said. We also will have Cookie Monster and Elmo giving out cookies or treats to the kids.
Reduced price food will be sold, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, salt potatoes, soda, wine and beer. Other carnival type foods sold will be cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones.
The food will be inexpensive for a family coming for dinner who doesn't want to spend a lot, Long said.
There will also be plenty of entertainment to count on during the day. The Baldwinsville Police Department will have a booth where they will be doing fingerprinting and booster seat safety. Patches, the fire prevention dog, will be there to instruct children on fire safety.
The city of Syracuse Piper Band will come and put on a bagpipe show for an hour. Also, Tawn Marie's Dance Studio and the Syracuse Irish Dancers will entertain the crowd. A disc jockey will also provide fun background music.
