For anyone on the hunt for vintage clothing, records or special handmade designs, Highly Atomic Vintage in the Geddes Plaza will meet all of your vintage needs.
For approximately a year and a half, the husband and wife team of Helen Carter and Mike Burton have "traveled and hunted" to bring the most unique vintage wear and sounds to the Geddes Plaza.
A unique aspect of Highly Atomic Vintage is the handmade vintage clothing. Local designers, including Carter, combine pieces of old clothing together to design a "new vintage" look. Some designers use vintage patterns and new materials to design dresses and corsets.
The owners of the store would not want anyone to forget about all of the old records that line the store. The store is currently expanding and soon there will be more than 3,000 records available for purchase.
Not only do the two work together, but they also play in a band -- "The Fallen Archies" as well. Their band has performed at Shifty's and a few other bars, but is always looking for more gigs. Their band plays covers from the Who, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, the Pixies, Radiohead and they play about a dozen originals as well.
"We wouldn't spend all of our time together if we didn't love what we do," Burton said. "We have really been able to get reintegrated with the community where we both grew up because of the store."
Owning your own business can be a difficult task at times, but Helen and Mike take it in stride.
"The best and worst part about this business is the unknown," Carter said. "We are happy to be different than a chain; everything in our store is one of a kind."
Highly Atomic Vintage has clothing, hats, purses, shoes, records and everything in between.
