North Chittenango Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dennis "Howie" Simmons was unable to attend his own banquet Saturday, leaving Assistant Chief Patrick Lum to fill in. Lum introduced the department's officers and executive board members before awarding recognitions to several members.
Dignitaries on hand for the event included Sen. David J. Valesky, District Attorney Donald Cerio, Sullivan Supervisor John M. Becker, Chittenango Mayor Bob Freunscht, Councilmen David Miner and John Brzuszkiewicz and former town supervisor and NCVFD life member John E. Gladney.
Sullivan Town Clerk Charlotte Ferstler swore in the new slate of officers, including President Randy Howard, Vice President Michele Wimmer, Treasurer Kim Howard and Secretary Tim Flynn.
Lum presented the Chief's Award for 2006 to Rescue Captain Skip DeForest. Lum said DeForest was recognized in particular for his integrity and dedication to the job, and for taking the initiative and stepping up to the plate in accepting the rescue captain role.
President's Awards went to Jane DeForest and Jeffrey Elwood. Jane was honored for "her many years of dedicated volunteer service" to the department. Elwood, Lum said, responded to 189 calls out of the 213 calls received by the department last year. President Floyd Moth accepted the award for Elwood, who was also unable to attend the event.
The event was held at the Wampsville Fireman's Field building and catered by its members. About 150 people attended.
