Retail growth in Camillus is in full swing, with no end in site. In addition to the "Hinsdale" project headed up by the Cameron Group, the Widewaters Group, which owns a portion of the Home Depot/Staples plaza, off of Hinsdale Road in Camillus will begin expanding the east end of the plaza in the spring.
"Approximately 8,900 square feet will be added on to the building that is already there," said Tracy Lauer. "We are in negotiations with Syracuse Federal Credit Union to come to the plaza, and we're working on a few other tenants for the other 4,500 square feet, but nothing is finalized yet."
The group is not pitching the space to a large chain store comparable to the size of Home Depot.
"All of the growth has been really exciting for the western suburbs. It makes shopping more convenient for the residents," Lauer said.
"The growth in retail has finally caught up to the housing growth there."
If there is one thing that the western suburbs could use it is some good restaurants to open. Widewaters Corporation has talked to some "quick serve" restaurants and casual dining establishments.
"A lot of restaurants franchisee out so it can be difficult to bring unique restaurants like Salsarita's to the area if no one is willing to run the business."
"As a Camillus resident it has been exciting to have a hand in this project," Lauer said. "We have nothing to do with the Cameron Group, but their project proposals definitely complement our expansion plans nicely."
