Skaneateles FD expected to start moving in Jan. 18

Town Councilor Ted Astemborski updated the town board on Friday on the progress of the new Skaneateles Fire Station. He said the Fire Station Project Committee expected total completion of the project by the end of January and the fire department to begin moving in by Jan. 18.

Current fire station projects:

Epoxy floors: the epoxy floors will begin to be put down on Jan. 2. This requires there be no traffic in the truck bays for about eight days. Striping will also be placed on the floors.

Exhaust system: An exhaust system is necessary in the truck bays to remove carcinogens and other dangerous fumes from the bay when firefighters are dressing. The system has been ordered, but will take several weeks to install once delivered.

Communications Equipment: The town, village and Fire Station Project Committee will meet with Finger Lakes Communications and Verizon on Jan. 5 for a presentation of the communications requirements of the fire station including necessary equipment and cost.

Insurance: The village and town boards are working out which organization will have the fire station added to its insurance policy. The town's insurance will cover the building but not the contents so the department will have to take out additional insurance. The village's insurance will cover both the building and the contents so the organizations are looking into which option will be more cost effective and provide the best coverage.
