Manlius Police Department up for re-accreditation

At a public meeting held Dec. 10 at the Manlius Village Centre, residents were given 10 minutes to discuss the re-accreditation of the town of Manlius Police Department. The Manlius PD is undergoing its annual review by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Deputy Chief Robert Schommer of the Huber Heights Police Department, Chief Ray Gordon of the Chevy Chase Village PD and Lieutenant Michael Webb of the Abingon Township PD all came as part of the assessment team. The team observed the Manlius PD.

Schommer said that the re-accreditation is done to ensure that members are complying with the set standards that the CALEA has created. During this process the assessors review documents and go on ride-alongs with officers to see how they function day to day. He said that the department must undergo this process every three years.

CALEA has 459 standards that agencies must follow in order to receive accreditation through the group. These standards include management, operations and functions. In order to remain in good standing the agency must maintain these standards and undergo the accreditation process on an annual basis.

The Manlius PD is one of seven agencies in New York State that go through this intense process voluntarily. Schommer said he was impressed with the fact that a group would take this challenge on willingly.

Captain William Bleyle said that the first year that CALEA accredited them was in 1996. The original assessment too place in 1995. The last review took place in 2004.

FM High School Principal James Chupaila said that it was very important to the running of the school that the executives and the police had a good relationship. He said that he is impressed with the competent job that they do. Chupaila said that in the 20 years he has worked for FM, they have never been dissatisfied with the police.
