Boards: VB approves Memphis contract

The Van Buren board approved the 2008 Memphis Fire Department contract after holding a public hearing at the Nov. 20 board meeting.

"You've been very good at holding the line," Supervisor Mary Crego said regarding the department's ability to maintain costs.

The town is responsible for 82 percent of the $114,100 total budget. A spokesman for the fire department said the budget includes funds to replace old equipment and cover increased fuel costs. With development expected to grow within the fire district, the department also plans to build a firehouse on property along West Dead Creek Road in Van Buren.

There were no comments made against the proposed budget.

Public hearing

A public hearing regarding a zone change from Residential-40 to Industrial at a property located on the corner of Stiles and Jones roads will be held at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 18 at the Van Buren Town Hall at the corner of Ellsworth and Van Buren roads.

Daniel Kermes, owner of the property at 3272 Stiles Road, requested the zone change to use the existing house as an office for his plumbing business and to build a pole barn to store his equipment including a dump truck, excavator and backhoe. Kermes also submitted signatures from neighbors verifying they don't mind him using the property for his business.

Two public hearings regarding MS4 local laws (storm-water regulations) will be held at 7:30 and 7:35 p.m. Thursday Dec. 20 at the Lysander Town Hall, 8220 Loop Road in Radisson. One public hearing will regard amending zoning laws and subdivision laws in respect to sediment control. The other public hearing will regard repealing the existing storm-water management law to enact new law.
