B'ville: Think spring and soccer

The CNY Family Sports Centre on Jones Road will be offering two soccer camps for youth during spring break.

Field player camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon April 9 to 12 and goalkeeper camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon April 13. Both camps are open to children from 5- to 12-years-old and will be held at the facility.

According to organizers, field player camp is tailored to both the inexperienced and advanced player. Younger participants will receive training focused on technique and basic tactics, giving them the skills necessary for success.

"It is extremely important to master the basic techniques of dribbling, passing, receiving and finishing at an early age," said Jon Ramin of CNY Family Sports Centre. "Each player will be pushed to develop these techniques throughout the camp. Our goal at any CNYFSC camp is to have each player learn one technique each day, then we can build on basic tactics."

Advanced players will be challenged to perform skills at speed and encouraged to develop their ability to read the game and play at a higher level.

"An advanced player should always train to perfect the basic techniques used in the game of soccer," Ramin said. "It is important to have the basic skills perfected so each player can perform these skills in game situations."

The goalkeeper camp will be tailored to beginner and experienced keepers.

"Goalkeepers are an essential part to any soccer team," Ramin said. "Keepers need the proper training to become the best at their position."

Technique will be a high priority for the beginner keepers and technique along with tactics will be priority with the experienced keepers.

The goalkeeper camp will include footwork drills, covering angles, shot stopping, ball handling, starting positions and knee hip shoulder diving.
