Ever since she assumed her new duties as Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse head coach, Adair Milmoe has patiently awaited the chance to celebrate a victory. She got the chance at home last Tuesday afternoon, when the Hornets came from behind to register a 12-8 victory over Liverpool. Just three days removed from a narrow season-opening loss to Guilderland in Albany, F-M would not find things easier against Liverpool, who started out with a trio of road victories. After a brief 2-0 lead, the Hornets watched the Warriors take charge for much of the rest of the first half, getting four unanswered goals and ultimately going to the break with a 5-3 advantage. Just before the half, though, Liverpool lost one of its top players, Leah Lazarz, to a head injury. She would not return. Without Lazarz to worry about, F-M used goals by Mary Elizabeth Klepper and Catie Caputo just 44 seconds apart to tie it, then surged ahead 7-6 on Caputo’s second goal 10:12 into the second half. Eventually, the Hornets’ lead grew to 10-7, but that got threatened when a yellow card put F-M a player down (a new rule this year) for three minutes late in the game. Somehow, F-M’s defense held Liverpool to one goal, then matched it when Allie Primo found the net with 3:19 to play, just as the penalty was ending. Primo tacked on an insurance goal with 1:07 left to seal it. Overall, the Hornets had a well-balanced attack. Klepper led the way, with three goals and two assists, while Primo, Caputo, Kate Bontsed and Emily Pierson each scored twice. Bonsted added two assists. Shannon McHugh had one goal and one assist. In just her second start, Lauren Webster was solid in the net, recording 14 saves, many of them in the second half as Liverpool tried to rally. In defeat, Casey Wilcox (three goals) and Alyssa Renk (two goals, one assist) led the Warriors’ attack. On what is expected to be a frigid Thursday night, F-M will go to Bragman Stadium to face Cicero-North Syracuse and look for two in a row.
