When you walk into the Faith Lutheran Church in Cicero, don't be surprised if you are asked to join the service. This idea of having open doors is a message the congregation wants to make a priority.
The Faith Lutheran Church, 6142 Cicero-Bridgeport Rd., celebrated its 40-year anniversary Sunday, Oct. 29 with cake and refreshments and an emphasis on renewal and revival. Parish coordinator Cassie Richmond attributed the recent shot in the arm to Pastor James Doyle, named last April to replace longtime Pastor James Shawd after 37 years leading the congregation.
Original charter member Phyllis Harm said two of her four children married in the church and attributed the anniversary as helping her remember past moments in the church.
Pastor Doyle uses technology to target and motivate new youth members to join. Fred Freytag, congregation president, described new capital improvements bringing multi-media and portable technology to the church in an effort to better utilize space and classrooms.
Freytag is adamant about the church's place in the community.
We want to work with other denominational churches while maintaining that new members are welcome, he said.
The church started in a house on Route 11 with 25 people and now has 150 families making up the congregation. A nursery school, started in 1972, is part of an active youth group that is a priority for the church, said Richmond.
The anniversary marked the beginning of the future. We want tospread the word of God using new methods, said Freytag.
