The Marcellus Community Childcare Center on 1 East Main Street in Marcellus has been awarded a New York State Health and Safety Grant for nearly $15,000. The grant was awarded to the center in September and the renovations need to be completed within one year. The daycare is overjoyed with the grant but is in desperate need of volunteers from the community to help with the renovations to the center.
Sharon Morgan, director of the daycare center, said, "This center has been open for 23 years in the same location. Our care is warm and welcoming but our space is very tired."
The renovation plans include all new flooring, new bathroom fixtures and storage, new window guards, and plans to remove a wall and adjoin a new toddler room to a bathroom.
The grant covers the cost of the materials, but not the cost of labor. Several parents and grandparents of the children that attend the daycare have volunteered their time and efforts. The center is looking for more volunteers from the community.
"We would welcome any individuals that are willing to give some time," Morgan said, "and especially professional volunteers in our community."
The daycare provides care for infants, toddlers preschoolers, and school-aged children through sixth grade.
Trenna Kelley, whose son attends the daycare said, "My husband and I are thrilled we found the Marcellus Community Child Care Center. We absolutely love it. Our son is very happy there, and feels very much at home. We can't wait to see the new renovations because it is just going to make an already fabulous center even better."
