A public hearing at the Manlius village board meeting on Sept. 26 revealed strong support for Local Law 2-2006. The law would create a 90-day extension of Local Law 7-2005, which established a moratorium on major subdivisions in the village.
Local Law 7-2005 expired on Sept. 28. However, the village board cannot vote on the extension until the Syracuse Onondaga County Planning Association approves it. The planning association's next meeting will be held on Oct. 10.
George Ryan of the Manlius Greenspace Coalition expressed his support for the extension. "The moratorium on residential buildings must stay in place," Ryan said. He was among six proponents at the meeting who agreed that extending the moratorium would be best in light of the Vision Manlius plan, which is not yet completed.
The sole opponent for the extension at the meeting wasn't too sure he was even an opponent. Dean Alcad, resident of Academy Hill expressed concern about the amount of time it will take to complete the Vision Manlius Plan.
"We could lose the interest of developers," Alcad explained. "Once the plan is rock solid and chiseled into stone, the village needs to have something we can sell."
Village clerk, Suzanne Snider reported that Onondaga County approved funding for the village's senior activity room renovation. Renovation funding for the swan pond and the gymnasium, however, were turned down.
Snider further advised that the current village expenditure audit, which was to have been completed by Sept. 27, would be extended through Oct. 16. Board members expressed significant displeasure that the original contract was not honored in the time agreed upon.
The village department of public works reported that work on the veterans' memorial is still underway and that bricks for the memorial will be delivered to the memorial this week. The official name of the park will be the Village of Manlius Memorial Park. The dedication ceremony for the memorial will be on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. To inquire about purchasing bricks, contact village recreation at 682-7887.
