The value of Canton Woods Senior Center is noted in the facility's mission statement, which reads "Helping seniors to remain active members of the community."
Foster reinforced the statement when he said seniors receive the support they need through the center rather than moving into a nursing home. He said the center also saves taxpayers money. His reasoning was while the Greater Baldwinsville residents provide money for the senior center through town and village taxes, the seniors are offered support programs that allow them to remain in their homes. If they were to be placed in nursing homes, the cost would be much higher and the money would eventually run out. Nursing home residents would then be placed on Medicaid, which is also paid for by taxpayers. So, Foster concluded, it is more cost effective to provide seniors services in their homes rather than moving them to a nursing home.
"It costs $2 to get a newsletter from the center where a nursing home costs $3,000 to $5,000 a month," Foster said. "Seniors are better off in their homes than in nursing homes."
