Joe Morelli realized a dream this past fall.
After operating Dough Boys Pizzeria out of rented facilities for more than 10 years, Morelli was finally able to purchase a building to house his delicious gourmet creations.
Dough Boys opened just after Halloween at its new location, the former All State building at 60 Salina St. in Baldwinsville.
Morelli got his start after being laid off from his engineering job. He had the option of opening his own pizzeria.
"I said 'If I do it, I am gonna run it properly.'"
He chose Baldwinsville not only for the existing businesses and developments, but also for its potential for growth, which, after 10 years, has proven to be immense. His equation for success is to treat employees with respect and have one location with the best service and best quality possible.
"It's worked great so far," he said.
One thing that sets Dough Boys apart from other pizzerias is the gourmet pizza.
"I looked at a lot of different pizzerias," Morelli said as he recalled his first days. "I looked at one in Maine with a fantastic menu of gourmet pizza. We modeled Dough Boys after that place and came out with a new gourmet every other year. We now have 19 gourmet pizzas and 40 toppings."
According to Morelli, the most popular gourmet is the Aglio, which consists of a garlic and butter sauce with oregano, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Coming in at a close second is the Buffalo-Style Chicken, which has seven different toppings, unique considering most pizzerias have only three toppings.
The people of Baldwinsville have been very good to us," Morelli said. "We are excited about all the new growth."
The fact that Morelli is a Steelers fan is more than obvious with his yellow and black d (c)cor and the terrible towels gracing his pizza shop.
"I've liked them ever since I was a kid," Morelli said. "With the Superbowl win last year, I am loving life."
And he keeps faith it will happen again this year.
Now that Morelli owns his own place, he plans to offer soft ice cream at the pizzeria in the near future.
