Not so cheery now?

The Cicero-North Syracuse varsity cheerleading team's fundraising efforts are under intense scrutiny by the district's administration, according to district superintendent Dr. Jerome Melvin.

Head coach Amy Stephenson, who is also a math teacher at C-NS High School, has been suspended without pay, Melvin said.

Melvin said the district auditor will be going over all of the team's financial records, and -- to be fair -- he is hiring an outside auditing firm to run a fine-tooth comb over everything.

Parents recently complained to Melvin that Stephenson, who led the team to a state championship last year, deposited money from fundraisers into her own personal account, not the team's.

The team had been raising money since August to pay for competitions.

"That's all I can really say on the matter at this time," Melvin said.

Melvin has told the Onondaga Sheriff's department about Stephenson, but said everybody's innocent until proven guilty

"I'm not saying anybody's done anything," he said. "She's entitled to due process while we get this thing figured out.

Melving said, For now, junior varsity cheerleading coach Linda Benson is acting as head coach for the team.
