Tuscarora Road renewed

Contractors completed paving of about 3,000 feet of Tuscarora Road in the village last week. In a nearly seamless fix, most of the roughest portions of the road are history.

"Most of Tuscarora from Bolivar Road west is new now," said Department of Public Works Superintendent Ray Snyder. "The other parts were repaved two years ago."

Tuscarora Road's condition has been a bone of contention for numerous area residents and discussed at length during village board meetings over the past couple of years.

The only portion not milled and resurfaced is the area between Bolivar Road east to the five corners intersection at Lakeport Road. The village plans to straighten that section of road as soon as funding for the project becomes available. Contractors on the state project to repair Route 5 through the village is using property adjacent to Tuscarora Road to dump hard fill removed from the roadbed.

"Of course, that fill now needs to settle for two years," Snyder said. "It's already been sitting there for one. [Route 5 contractors] are supposed to cover and seed it until we can forge ahead with straightening that section of road and fixing the grade."

Mayor Bob Freunchst, who also volunteers with the Chittenango Fire Department, said he's seen enough accidents on the hill and curve, and the village Board of Trustees is actively seeking ways to fund the project.
