One man has been charged in the burglary of a Canastota bar and restaurant, and is facing the possibility of a felony conviction - all for 864 ounces of beer.
Michael Zwart, 29, of Canal Street in Canastota is alleged to have entered Ma and Pa's Grill on July 25 at about 2:30 a.m. through the basement door by force.
Zwart allegedly removed three cases of Budweiser from the establishment and exited. An independent witness acquainted with him recognized Zwart, and called police to report the burglary.
Canastota Police Chief James Zophy said three cases of Budweiser were recovered in the area of Zwart's residence.
Zwart was charged with second degree burglary, a class C felony; fourth degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor; and petit larceny, also a class A misdemeanor.
Zophy said Zwart was charged previously in connection to a break in at the same location, and was found possessing a similar quantity of beer. Because police could not put him inside the establishment, he was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, a class A misdemeanor.
