Short-handed and on the road against an unbeaten opponent, the Cazenovia girls basketball team was supposed to be in trouble. Instead, the Lakers turned adversity into opportunity, going to Solvay last Tuesday night and halting the Bearcats’ season-opening, five-game win streak with an impressive 46-34 victory. Kiley Evans, the top scorer throughout the Lakers’ 2-3 start, was unavailable due to injury, and her absence, for a while, cut into Cazenovia’s attack. Still, the Lakers played tight and consistent defense to help produce a 24-23 halftime lead, and didn’t let a third-quarter slump bother it. Also, Cazenovia got a break when Solvay’s top player, Carrie Smith, left the game with a knee injury in that frame, not to return. Down the stretch, the Lakers shut Solvay down, limiting the hosts to a single free throw as it went on a 17-1 spurt to produce its most impressive win of the young season. Molly Dougherty led that late charge, pouring in 15 points. Breanna Smith and Carrie Stevens, like Dougherty, both helped to fill Evans’ scoring void, as they each put in 10 points. Carrie Smith led Solvay with 11 points before her early exit.
